We have all been warned about the perils of “living above your means”. Financially, that is exceptional advice. However, there are certain times when living above our means is exactly what we should be doing.
When we are in the depths of despair, the crux of crises, or the grip of grief, we are often hard-pressed to find relief on our own. We don’t have the strength, wisdom, or power to rise above our circumstance – not by ourselves. It is then that we need to look above, and LIVE above our own means and devices.
When we have been used, abused, and confused by others – when we are busted, disgusted, and distrusted – when we have been beat up, fed up, locked up and have given up, we need to trust not in our own understanding. Rather, let us look upward, with eyes and hearts focused not upon ourselves or even our circumstances. Let us look, focus, and live above our ourselves, to One who is able to provide, protect, and redeem.
We don’t have the ability to see into the future any more than we can change the past. However, there is One who always was, is, and will be. We are able to study biology, ecology, and zoology. But there is One who created every body of water, plant, animal, star, galaxy and universe. We can, according to our own means and devices, go to the physician when our bodies are ill, the psychiatrist when our minds are ill, and the therapist when our relationships are ill. Beloved, I am here to tell you that there is One who sticks closer than a brother and who will never betray you. He is a Wonderful Counselor. He is such a dynamic healer that you need only touch the hem of His garment.
In short, when things are not faring well my friend, look above yourself. When things are going well, look above yourself. In all circumstances, cast your eyes, your heart, your mind, and your faith upward – Living Above Your Means.
Live GOLDEN: Grateful. Optimistic. Loving. Driven. Encouraging. No matter what.
